Starting current, limitation

Corriente de arranque, limitación de

Courant de démarrage

The starting current of an electric motor is far higher than its rated current, and also depends on the load to which the motor is subject during start. Motors which start load-free have, depending on their type, starting currents of up to 1.5 to 2.5 times higher than the rated current. Motors which start under heavy load require a starting current up to 5 times higher than the rated current for a short time. Starting current limitation is possible with the help of a series resistor. This resistor is often actuated automatically by the power switch when the tool is switched on. Modern electronics offer several starting current limitation methods. Usually, starting current limitation leads to a longer start-up time which is also known as soft start.

The starting performance of an electric motor depends on many different factors. The strength of the starting current, the duration of the starting time and the load during the start-up phase all have a critical influence.
