A distinction is made between internal and external vibrators. Vibrators are motor driven tools which generate mechanical vibrations of diverse frequencies and amplitudes by means of controlled unbalances.

Internal or immersion vibrators have a pre-set unbalance which depends on the rotational speed of the motor. Rotary current asynchronous motors operating at increased frequency are used as drive motors.

Immersion vibrators are power tools designed to compact concrete. The vibrator piston generates vibrations of small amplitudes and is immersed in the material.

Mechanical vibrations vent and compact the concrete. Air-powered immersion vibrators are also rather common; here frequency and amplitude are set by changing the operating pressure in the appliance.

External vibrators use rotary current asynchronous motors with 50 Hz and 200 Hz. Centrifugal weights are attached to both sides of the drive shaft. To suit the various operating requirements, the centrifugal force can be adjusted continuously by changing the position of the weights. External vibrators are available with varying centrifugal power.
