Safety requirements
In addition to the current European guidelines, special safety standards for power tools have to be observed. In 1933 power tools were first included in the regulations of the German Association of Electrotechnicians (Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker - VDE). The current regulation VDE 0740 Safety for hand-held power tools is equivalent to the European standard EN 50144 containing all the definitions and safety provisions required for power tools. The international standard ICE 745 of the International Commission for Electrotechnology is largely identical with EN 50144. Another standard, EN 61029, deals with semi-stationary power tools like bench grinders, etc.
