A planer is a power tool with a rotating blade drum; it is designed for the chip-removing treatment of mainly wood or plastic surfaces. The axis of the blade drum lies in parallel to the guide surface.

In spite of all industrially prefabricated wood components, portable planers with universal motors are indispensable for those adapting, fitting or thicknessing jobs which still have to be done by hand. The electric planer is similar in design, handling and performance to the conventional and generally well-known manual planer. The high rotational speed of the universal motor is transmitted to the blade drum by an elastic belt drive.

A set of reversible carbide blades is highly recommended because they can be easily replaced. HSS blades can be re-sharpened, however they have to be re-adjusted when changed. A self-closing blade guard or similar protection ( parking shoe) can be used to protect the blade drum during coasting. The step-by-step adjustment of the planing depth varies from one model to another. with a maximum depth of 4 mm. The rebating depth stop limits the planing depth during rebating, the rebating width stop limits the rebating width.

The blade drum must not pose a threat to the operator even if the blade retaining screws are loose. This is guaranteed by using a safety blade drum.
