Difference between the power input and output of a transmission. For physical reasons, the efficiency ratio is always less than 100%. The difference is converted by friction into heat. The efficiency ratio of a transmission depends on its size (larger transmissions have a better efficiency ratio than smaller transmissions), from the tooth characteristics and quality, and also from the transmission type and the number of gears.
