Stirrer baskets which stir upwards are recommended for viscuous fluids since they pull the heavy particles up from the bottom preventing air bubbles from being pulled under and remaining in the liquid due to its viscosity.

Stirrer baskets which stir downwards are recommended for thinner liquids because they prevent splashing. Air bubbles which are stirred into the liquid can rise and escape due to the thin-bodiedness of the liquid.
