Sheet metal shears are power tools designed for the shearing/cutting of sheet metal, plate and strips. The shearing blade executes a stroke motion.

Shear cutting can cause the processed materials to warp.

Sheet metal shears are recommended for trimming prepared metal sheets, but only with restrictions for internal cut-outs due to the large pilot hole which has to be drilled for this purpose. Their main advan-

tages are low weight and excellent curving ability. Cutting through thick sheets or several layers of sheets is not possible with portable shears since the required deformation of the material has to be done by the operator. Corrugated and trapezoidal sheeting, corrugated plastic, corrugated building materials, profiled stock and pipes with round diameters cannot be cut with shears, they can only be processed with jigsaws and nibblers.
