A safety release clutch is a mechanical clutch designed to prevent the sudden blockage of power tools. In the event of overloading, the clutch teeth disengage, thus reducing the surplus torque and protecting the operator from possible injury.

However, safety release clutches do not interrupt the power supply to the appliance, which means that a certain amount of restoring torque has to be compensated by the operator.
