Moulded plywood or preformed plywood parts were already known at the end of the 19th century. Michael Thornet, a wood bending specialist series-produced the first chair backs and seats from cross-wise laminated beech veneers, some of them even with relief-like surfaces.
Nowadays the technique of compression moulding has been perfected to the extent that there is hardly any limitation on the size or shape of laminated veneer packages (mainly beech).
