In luminous diodes a part of the semiconductor material is excited by electric current to emit visible (or invisible infrared) radiation. Aggregate substances added to the semiconductor material can produce just about any colour. Due to their sturdiness, low power consumption, and their high reliability LEDs are perfectly suited as display elements.
