Friction bearing

Gleitlager

Cojinete de fricción

Palier glisseur

A bearing in which the rotating, bearing-supported pivot glides on a smooth surface in static bearing shells. The opposite: antifriction or rolling bearing. The many types of friction bearings range from self-lubricating bearings to types which reduce bearing friction to a minimum by a lubricating film on the sliding face.

Antifriction bearings are mainly used today and have replaced friction bearings whereas modern porous bearings (with bearing bushes made of special low-friction material) are on the advance due to their outstanding properties in case of defective lubrication. Friction bearings are recommended where shafts, cylinders and axis perform a stroke motion, i.e. where the sliding face is rather long.
