Term describing the number of failures in the case of technical appliances. The failure rate is divided into three subgroups:

- Break-in failures

- Random failures

- Wear-out failures

Break-in failures usually occur during the early stages of the tools operation due to errors during construction, production or wrong choice of materials.

Random failures occur during standard operation. These failures are rather rare.

Wear-out failures usually occur towards the end of the planned service life. These failures often depend on how the machine was used and whether the service and maintenance intervals were observed.
