A portable chain saw (hand-rail chain saw, for one machine operator in accordance with DIN 38 822 or for two operators) is an electric power tool designed mainly for wood cutting. The rotating saw chain is supported by a guide rail (sword).

Its cutting speed is appr. 9 m/sec, automatic lubrication takes care of oiling the chain, the oil flow rate can be adjusted. ATTENTION: Only ecological (bio-degradable) chain oils should be used. The sword length varies to match the different motor power, a chain brake takes care of safety in case of recoil.

Chain saws with combustion engines are common in professional forestry; their disadvantages are their noise, heat and exhaust fumes which tend to cause irritations.
