Carbon brushes are used in universal motors. They are subject to operational wear. It is necessary to check them periodically and to replace them when they are worn out. Self-disconnecting cut-out brushes break the circuit automatically when their minimum length is reached. When the service display in rotary hammers lights up the carbon brushes have to be replaced within the next 8 working hours.
