Power tools like angle grinders are often subject to a lot of extra strain because the dust generated during work is taken in with the cooling air. If the grinding debris and dust contains aggressive particles like silica, metal shavings, chips of cast iron skin or stone splinters, the end windings of the pole shoes or the armature can be damaged which could lead to the premature failure of the motor. This problem is dealt with by bandaging the end windings, by special impregnation or other effective measures. Armouring is costly, but the service life of armoured motors is 5 times longer than that of unarmoured motors which pays for itself.
